본 연구는 일반적으로 동반되는 전기적 상전이와 구조적 상전이를 강상관계 물질인 전이금속 산화물의 VO2의 이종 계면 설계를 이용해 분리시키는 데 성공했다. 구조적 상전이가 동반되지 않은 순수한 전기적 상전이를 계산과학을 이용해 예측하고 실험을 이용해 구현했다.
VO2는 전기적으로 절연체인 저온의 monoclinic 상과 전기적으로 금속성을 띠는 고온의 rutile 상을 가지며, 상전이 온도는 상온 근방인 68℃다. 본 연구에서는 산소 공공 농도를 조절해 서로 다른 상전이 온도를 가지는 VO2의 이종 박막을 구현, rutile VO2와 monoclinic VO2의 계면을 구성했다. 그 결과 rutile 구조와 monoclinic 구조 간의 에너지 띠 휘어짐을 통해 monoclinic 영역에 hole 도핑이 유도되어, monoclinic 구조의 절연성의 원인인 전자 간의 상호작용을 줄여 구조적 상전이 없는 전기적 상전이를 설계 및 구현했다.
